We're calling it: the Virtual Console is dead. There have been two games this summer. If there are any more, consider them stragglers. Nintendo, if you'd like to prove us wrong by stepping up the Virtual Console release schedule from "almost never" to "occasionally," please feel free.

There are still DSiWare and WiiWare games, though, including Divergent Shift (formerly Reflection), the long-awaited puzzle platformer about navigating two mirrored versions of the same character across different terrains simultaneously.

WiiWare

  • Space Trek (Calaris, 1 player, 700 Wii Points): A third-person vehicle-based shooter in which you pilot a space jet through a hostile alien planet.
  • A Monsteca Corral: Monsters vs. Robots (Onteca, 1-4 players, 500 Wii Points): Control a herd of "Stompies" to avoid capture by enemy robots.

DSiWare

  • Divergent Shift (Konami, 1 player, 800 DSi Points): Control one character on two screens in this puzzle platformer (formerly Reflection), avoiding dangers on both simultaneously.
  • 3D Mahjong (Cosmigo, 1 player, 500 DSi Points): 50 different mahjong layouts, as well as "Memory" and "Matching" minigames for those of us who have no idea how to play mahjong, but somehow end up with this game.
  • myNotebook: Carbon (Nnooo, 1 player, 500 DSi Points): The latest release of Nnooo's notebook app includes 24 "unlockable squared and lined paper styles," five ink colors, and page exporting functionality.
  • Just Sing! National Anthems (Engine Software, 1 player, 200 DSi Points): It's a karaoke game, in which you sing the national anthems of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Japan, and the US. Okay.

More Details About Nintendo 3DS Kingdom Hearts Game Square Enix is making a Kingdom Hearts game for the Nintendo 3DS. The main characters will be Sora and Riku, and players will alternate between them while playing as they make their way through the game's "mysterious" story. How...mysterious!

While unable to go into great length about the game system, designer Tetsuya Nomura says that the developers are thinking about "falling down" as a key point for the game.

"What I want to do is make a Kingdom Hearts you can touch," the designer adds, making the following pun. "A falling 'Sora' and a flying 'Riku'."

"Sora" is not only the name of a Kingdom Hearts character. It also means "sky" in Japanese. Likewise, "Riku" can mean "land".

"I guess the game's theme would be trust," Nomura says. There are things in the game that players cannot do alone and thus, players will need to have have trust in order to be successful.

For the Nintendo 3DS Square Enix will start with Kingdom Hearts, Nomura continues, and then they are thinking of branching out to other franchises.

Does Capcom Have Nintendo 3DS Release Plans For This Year? Nope.

At this year's E3 gaming expo, Capcom showed off two still-in-development Nintendo 3DS games: Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition and the tentatively titled Resident Evil: Revelations. Don't look for them to be hitting your local game shop anytime soon, though.

At a recent investors meeting, Capcom was asked whether it planned to release any Nintendo 3DS games during the financial year ending next April. Capcom stated it did "not expect" those 3DS titles to be ready for release during this fiscal year.

When pressed further about when Capcom will release Nintendo 3DS games, the company replied that it had not yet set any dates.

Capcom will be using its in-house game engine "MT Framework", which it uses for console and PC titles, to develop Nintendo 3DS games. "By employing our original game development engine the 'MT Framework'," Capcom stated, "we are able to streamline the basic development processes with those for other consoles. Thus we don't really expect to see a dramatic rise in costs."

When rumors were flying about a new GoldenEye game just before E3, both Wii and DS versions were supposedly in the works. But when Nintendo and Activision made it official during the expo, only the Daniel Craig-ified Wii game was announced (despite the DS logo also appearing on the official game page). Today, the DS version of GoldenEye 007 showed up again, this time in Nintendo's upcoming releases calendar that joined the company's quarterly earnings report.

Following the appearance, we confirmed with Activision that a DS iteration of GoldenEye 007 is, in fact, in development and will be released alongside the Wii game later this year. The handheld version will be developed by perpetual mobile game port house n-Space; though an Activision representative emphasized to us, "it's not a port." Additionally, both Daniel Craig (Bond) and Judi Dench ("M") will voice their characters in the DS game. We were tempted to ask about John Cleese, but then we remembered he's busy doing other, likely wonderful voice work at the moment.

Capcom opened a site for Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, its upcoming 3DS Street Fighter game, featuring several new screenshots. We thought we'd take the opportunity to compare the graphics in this handheld version to the existing Street Fighter IV on iPhone.

However, there's not much of a comparison. The iPhone Street Fighter uses pre-rendered 2D sprites based on the console/arcade game's 3D models, for a look reminiscent of Killer Instinct. The 3DS game, on the other hand, appears to use lower-detail versions of the actual 3D models, judging by the dynamic camera angles. That's why you get to see the extreme close-up of Ken's goofy punch face up there.

Of course, it's worth noting that these are early screenshots, and the final game may come out looking different. Given the relatively low texture detail, though, this looks like something that could be possible on a handheld system. Compare the two games yourself in our galleries.

Look, considering Nintendo drew just about every one of its big guns from their respective holsters when it revealed the 3DS lineup during an E3 press conference last month, we don't blame you if this story doesn't thrill you to your core. The company recently filed a set of trademarks relating to software for the three-dimensional device, including "CrossPass," "CrossPass Network," "CrossPass Connection" and "CrossPass Mode." It seems the handheld's always-on Tag mode has been given a much more Google-able moniker.

Nintendo also filed trademarks for "3D Paddleball," "3D Hopper," "Target Shooting" and "3D Challenge" -- all of which were available in tech demo form at E3. Does this mean they could see the light of day when the 3DS gets released next spring? We're not sure, but we wouldn't mind sinking a few more hours mastering the subtleties of Hallway Pong.
We were all surprised to see a Metal Gear Solid demo for 3DS. Probably not as surprised, however, as the Kojima Productions staff who didn't know it was being developed. In a Famitsu interview (translated by Andriasang), Hideo Kojima described how, after the completion of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, he secretly assigned a small number of staffers to the project on a different floor of the Kojima Productions office -- causing other Kojipro staff to believe the others were on vacation.

Kojima seems confident that the demo will evolve into a full game, which will probably still be a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 -- after Peace Walker, he wanted to tell the story of The Boss again. "MGS3's story can't change, so we're thinking of Co-ops, 3D and portable-like elements," Kojima said. The final game may actually look better than the demo, as well. "The high level models are about the same quality as the stuff we made on the PlayStation 3," Kojima said, "although it's tough to see this. If we'd had a bit more time, we could have made something better."

Saints Row 3DS Is Also An Xbox Live Arcade Game, Connects To Saints Row 3The violent open-world action of Saints Row is something of a surprising addition to the Nintendo 3DS line-up. But there's a good reason—two of them actually—for Saints Row's appearance on Nintendo's new 3D game machine.

According to an interview with Danny Bilson of publisher THQ at IndustryGamers, Nintendo lobbied heavily to bring the mature content of Saints Row to the Nintendo 3DS in order "to launch with a very balanced portfolio."

That was a no-brainer for THQ, who was already developing the game—in 3D, no less—for Xbox Live Arcade. Bilson also says that the Nintendo 3DS version of the game will feature some sort of interaction with the forthcoming Saints Row 3, offering unlockable content between the two versions.

While it's obvious that THQ is going to be saturating us with Saints Row over the next couple years, the real winner is the consumer. Finally, we'll get a chance to spray people with liquid sewage in 3D. Welcome to the future!

Pokemon Black And White Gets A New Trailer (And Release Date!) The latest entry in the Pokemon franchise, Pokemon Black and White, has a release date for Japan. Would you like to know what it is?

It is September 18. The game will feature new Pocket Monsters and a more "mature" female trainer in Daisy Dukes!

Nintendo of America Says Nintendo 3DS's Out Next Year Those in North America hoping for a holiday 2010 release for the Nintendo 3DS? Tough luck.

Tonight on talk show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime was asked when the company's upcoming glasses-free 3D portable will be release. His reply?

"Next year."

When the portable was initially revealed, Nintendo said it would be released in Japan before March 2011. Now, Nintendo of America saying that it will be out "next year".

No clarification if that is a global launch or just North America.
