"I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favorite announcement from Gamescom."
The official reveal of Mass Effect 2 on PlayStation 3 comes after this morning's appearance of an Amazon listing for just that. The retailer's January 31 date matches with the official "January 2011" timeline given at the presentation. According to an EA press release, the PS3 version will include "hours of bonus content" (the existing DLC, perhaps?). BioWare's Dr. Ray Muzyka classified the announcement as "friggin' awesome," and we're inclined to agree.
During his just-concluded GDC Europe keynote presentation, Guerrilla Games Managing Director Herman Hulst confirmed that the company has started work on a new IP not related to the Killzone franchise. No further details were given about the new project, but Hulst said the company was looking to broaden their abilities to create not just Killzone but "any game we want to make."
How's this for heady irony? The "Games Aren't Art" faction takes a mighty blow today, and it comes at the hands of the publisher that brought us ... 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand. THQ has revealed "uDraw," a four-by-six inch tablet peripheral for the Wii that makes drawing as natural an input into the system as punching and pointing. It launches this holiday season in the states for $70, bundled with uDraw Studio, an "expansive drawing, coloring and art-based video game." A couple of other titles, Pictionary and Dood's Big Adventure will arrive on the same day for the appealing price of $30 with more on the way. Wiicasos in international territories can look for the pad in early 2011
Kinect, the Xbox 360's motion-sensing camera controller, will be out in the US on November 4. But what about Europe? Europe, you won't have long to wait.
Microsoft said earlier today that the peripheral will be released in Europe (and that includes the UK) on November 10. A little later, yes, but not even a week later, which for hardware and Europe isn't too bad a deal at all.
For the record, Kinect is out in the US on November 4. For the full slate of European pricing details for Kinect and its various bundles, head on over here.

Upstairs at a two-story GameStop in scenic downtown Cologne, Germany, a young woman tries out Kinect, where du bist der Controller
I've arrived in Cologne a few hours ago, took a brief nap in my tiny hotel room without air conditioning, and then took a stroll through the town, looking for something to spend money on. As often happens at home, a wild GameStop appeared.
I browsed a bit, but I didn't buy anything. What I might think is a game never released in North America often ends up being something widely available in the U.S. under a different name with different box art, so I've quit trying.
I did wander upstairs though, where the PSP, Xbox 360, and PC games were hidden. There I found a little area cordoned off, with a young German woman playing around with Joy Ride, or as it should be called in Germany, Fahrvergnügen.
Sorry the clip is so short. The GameStop employees were eying me suspiciously. Obviously they didn't realize I am American and must video everything or risk having my passport revoked.
We've got two Mikes and one Brian in Cologne, Germany this week for Gamescom, the ever-expanding video game showcase that makes E3 look tiny and introduced the PS3 Slim to the world last year. We'll be covering some big events live. Bookmark this.
Cologne is six hours ahead of my time zone (East Coast) and eight hours ahead of Kotaku's posting time (Mountain time). Today, Monday, there is no Gamescom.
On Tuesday, there will be some major pre-Gamescom events:
-12:30pm Gamescom Time: Microsoft's showcase begins.
-4pm Gamescom Time: EA press conference (streamed at EA)
-6pm Gamescom Time: Sony press conference
You can expect liveblogs of those events, our Internet connections willing.

On Wednesday, Gamescom opens to the press. Wednesday will kick off three days of show coverage. Our guys in Germany will meet with everyone from Valve to Blizzard to Ubisoft, with a dash of Infamous 2 and Final Fantasy XIV thrown in. You can expect stories, photos and — if bandwidth can be found — video from the show all of those days.

From my spot in New York, I can also vouch for upcoming Gamescom-dated impressions of Call of Duty: Black Ops, Dance Central, Rock Band 3, and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. I got an early opportunity to check out Gamescom builds of those games and will be permitted by the games' publishers to write about them in the coming days.
So look for the liveblogs on Tuesday and more news from this mega-show all week long. Gamescom isn't just for the European crowd. Expect some news that we can all care about. Plus, we'll find out if Mike Fahey was able to creep into Gamescom's tent city, an adventure in its own right.
